What Happens During a Hot Stone Massage ?

Hot stone massage is a popular complementary therapy for many conditions.  During a hot stone massage, smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on specific parts of your body.  To prevent burns, there should always be a barrier between hot massage stones and your skin.

A hot stone massage is a type of massage therapy. It’s used to help you relax and ease tense muscles and damaged soft tissues throughout your body.

During a hot stone massage, smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on specific parts of your body. The stones are usually made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat. According to the University of New Hampshire Health Services, hot massage stones are heated to between 130 and 145 degrees.

The stones may be placed:

  • along your spine
  • on your stomach
  • on your chest
  • on your face
  • on your palms
  • on your feet and toes

Massage therapists may hold heated stones as they massage your body using Swedish massage techniques such as:

  • long strokes
  • circular movements
  • vibration
  • tapping
  • kneading

Sometimes, cold stones are also used during a hot stone massage. Cold stones may be used after hot stones to calm any engorged blood vessels and to soothe the skin.

Benefits of hot stone massage

All massages generally fall under the alternative medicine umbrella. They’re becoming a popular complementary therapy for many conditions. Here are some advantages of getting a hot stone massage:

1. Helps relieve muscle tension and pain

Heat has long been used to ease muscle tension and pain. It helps increase blood flow to the affected area. It may also reduce muscle spasms and increase flexibility and range of motion. Cold therapy helps relieve inflammation. Depending on your symptoms, alternating hot and cold stones during your massage may be helpful.

2. Reduces stress and anxiety

It’s the position of the American Massage Therapy Association that “massage therapy can be effective for stress relief.” Research supports their opinion. A 2001 study showed that a ten-minute massage improved cardiovascular responses such as stroke volume. A 1997 study found that 15-minute, onsite chair massages in the workplace significantly reduced stress compared to a 15-minute break without massage.

A 2015 study found that people who underwent abdominal colorectal surgery had less pain, tension, and anxiety after receiving post-operative massage.

3. Promotes sleep

A 2006 literature review found massage may be an alternative to sleeping pills in adults with insomnia. The research showed that back massage helped promote relaxation and sleep. A 2001 study showed that infants with sleep problems who were given a 15-minute massage by their parents went to sleep faster. They were also more alert, active, and positive upon awakening. Massage is thought to help you enjoy more restorative sleep, although it’s not completely understood why.

4. May help relieve symptoms of autoimmune diseases

Hot stone massage may relieve painful conditions such as fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes widespread, chronic pain. According to a 2002 study, people with fibromyalgia who received a 30-minute massage slept longer, had fewer trigger points, and had decreased levels of substance P (a substance involved in transmitting pain signals) than people with the condition who received relaxation therapy. More research is needed, however, before massage becomes a standard fibromyalgia treatment.

A 2013 study found that people with rheumatoid arthritis may benefit from a moderate-pressure massage, such as hot stone massage. Participants in the study experienced less pain, greater grip strength, and a greater range of motion after one month of massage therapy.

5. May help decrease cancer symptoms

A large, three-year study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management examined how massage affected pain, fatigue, stress and anxiety, nausea, and depression in 1,290 people with cancer. The study showed massage, especially Swedish massage, improved cancer symptoms, even in those with substantial symptoms. Researchers believe the comforting use of human touch played a role.

6. May boost immunity

Massage may give your immune system a boost. According to a 2010 study , a single session of Swedish massage therapy had a positive and acute impact on immunity. Blood samples taken before and after the massage showed a decrease in arginine-vasopressin, a hormone that helps regulate blood pressure and water retention.

Who may benefit from a hot stone massage?

Anyone who is experiencing muscle tension and pain, insomnia, or stress may benefit from a hot stone massage. If you have a chronic condition that causes pain, talk to your doctor to see if a hot stone massage is a good option for you.

When you have already done your patch test and you’re ready for your first ever lash extensions, here is your check list before your appointment!

Yes, we know how it sounds.  But it’s very important as you won’t be able to wet your eyelashes for at least 48 hours… Therefore is just better to wash your hair just before your lash visit to be sure you won’t be missing our on having a beautiful hair day.

We don’t recommend coming for your first lash extensions appointment with full eye make up. It just saves your time and all of the hassle when you come make up free. Of course you can wear foundation, have your brows done. But please skip heavy mascara and loads of eye shadows. Thank you!

If your natural eyelashes are almost invisible, please consider tinting them. It will make the process of application much more quicker and easier for your lash technician. And also- you will have fuller look afterwards.

First lash extensions appointment might sound very complicated. But to be honest- it’s all about YOU. So please relax. If you will feel anything that’s uncomfortable just tell your lash technician. If you have a string reaction to coffee- don’t drink it just before the appointment as we want you to be very calm. That’s why this is very often called lash nap- we want you just to close your eyes and enjoy!

Keep Lashes Clean for Optimum Lash Health, Longevity and Retention.

Washing your lashes is extremely important for a few reasons. The obvious reason is to remove makeup that you’ve worn.  Other not so obvious reasons is because we all carry mites on our body. Most of the time these mites are harmless, however, there are times when these mites can get out of hand and have a lil feast on the bacteria and oils left on your skin, and, especially on your lash line. When this occurs you may have encountered two possible irritants such as Demodex and Blepharitis. Demodex (eyelash mites) seem to have a connection with mascara  as women who wear a lot of mascara tend to have a higher prevalence of these mites on their eyelashes. This is the same case for people who wear a lot of eye makeup in general. Demodex often feed on your skin cells and oils which often accumulate on your skin pores as well as in hair follicles.

Beware of Blaspharitis

Blepharitis commonly occurs when tiny oil glands located near the base of the eyelashes become clogged. This leads to irritated and red eyes and sometimes can also have a yellowish crusty appearance.

Using an oil free foaming cleanser that contains gentle yet effective ingredients such as tea tree oil can help keep these critters at bay. Ensuring that you have the proper cleanser is imperative to lash health and allows for longer wear of your extensions.

Many ladies aren’t told to wash their lashes and may experience a burning or stinging in the shower… this is dirt, oil dust, sleep, tears and other fun stuff that has been accumulating in your extensions so when you get them wet these aggravating ickies drop into you eyes causing irritation. Eek

Don’t be Fooled by False Retention

Some clients have told me they’ve had 5-6 week retention before, coincidently these clients weren’t told to wash their lashes. I sometimes refer to this as ‘false retention’. This is when all those nasties stick to your natural lash and extensions anchoring them together. You lose on average 3-5 lashes a day so when one is ready to exfoliate it can’t because it’s stuck to its neighbour unwillingly by some of those culprits listed above causing strain on the follicle and making your extensions look stiff and feel yucky.

Lashes should be worn for an average of 2-3 weeks tops, I would prefer around 2 weeks for the following reason. I sometimes compare it to nails. You can have your nails for 3 or more weeks, but sometimes they’re not looking so good. Some have chipped or you lost one or two even. Think of lashes like your nails in the same sense. If you’re at 3 or more weeks the chances or you having full, fluffy not twisting extensions is unlikely. And when you arrive at your fill appointment your stylist will need to remove those ones that have grown too far away from the lash line as it is damaging on the follicle causing strain as well it would look odd beside a freshly placed extension closer to the lash line.

When’s the Best Time to Fill?

Many places ask for a minimum % to be remaining in order to qualify as a fill rather then a new set. This is calculated when the old extensions are removed not when you arrive. So coming at 3 weeks or longer with loose, grown out lashes doesn’t always put you in the ‘fill’ category. All stylists are different and have varying policies so check with your lash guru about what she thinks is best for you and your lash health!

Manicure and Pedicure Health Benefits

You already know that a mani-pedi makes your nails look fantastic.  What you may not know is that a professional nail treatment actually has long-term and health benefits as well!

Skin Care

Your hands are more exposed to daily dirt and weather than any part of your body, except maybe your face.  That means that they accumulate grime easily, as well as constantly create new skin cells and slough off the old.  Your feet are generally only exposed in the spring and summer times, but walking on them all day can create callouses and other uneven skin conditions.

A professional manicure includes a thorough cleaning and lotions designed to exfoliate your skin.  Any grime will be removed, as will dead skin cells, keeping your hands smooth and reducing any appearance of wrinkles.  A professional pedicure will also exfoliate your skin, as well as remove any callouses on the bottom of your feet.  This not only makes your feet more attractive, it also helps you distribute your weight more evenly across your feet, which can reduce leg and back pain after standing for long periods.

Blood Flow

In addition to exfoliating, moisturizers and cuticle treatments are massaged into the skin in a professional mani-pedi.  This massage action is not only incredibly relaxing, it also helps to improve blood circulation to your extremities.  This can reduce pain and help your body distribute heat during cold months.

Fungal Infections

Fungi often grow on toe nails when your feet are exposed to excess moisture.  Often, it takes a few weeks for the infection to become noticeable.  However, a professional manicurist will be able to identify a fungal infection even in its early stages, when it is most easily treated.  Getting regular pedicures is actually a great way to maintain the health of your toes.

Mental Health

A mani-pedi is a great way to relax and be pampered.  After a stressful day or week, these can completely relieve your stress, and the benefits of having gorgeous nails can last for weeks.  A great nail color is a perfect accessory to any outfit, so you can cross painting your nails off your list of things to do.

Both the physical and mental health benefits of getting a manicure and pedicure are incredible.  Your feet and hands will both look and feel great, your stress will go down, and your circulation will increase.  The whole procedure takes relatively little time, so contact the Bliss Med spa today to schedule your manicure and pedicure.

What is Microblading ?

Whether it’s called “microblading”, “eyebrow embroidery”, “microstroking”, “semi-permanent makeup”, “cosmetic tattooing”, “pigment embroidery” or “3D eyebrow embroidery”, it’s undeniable that this new technique is the new big thing in salon treatments and permanent makeup. When I first started seeing microblading before & after pictures popping up on the Internet, I didn’t really believe them. They were the definition of too good to be true! The before pictures looked a lot like the eyebrows I had seen in my day to day life as a makeup artist and eyebrow technician: sparse, uneven, short, or spaced too far apart. The afters? Perfect, natural looking, lush, symmetrical brows!

So What Is Microblading/ 3D Eyebrow Embroidery Magic, Exactly?

3D eyebrow embroidery or microblading is a “permanent” makeup technique done with a tiny, angled blade made of a row of even tinier needles. The microblading blade is dipped in ink, and then lightly scraped across the skin in delicate strokes, mimicking hair. I put the word permanent in quotation marks because, while it is the technical term, it’s not apt.

Unlike eyebrow tattoos that often look unnatural and unappealing, eyebrow microblading lasts for 3 years at most, providing you with your dream naturally looking bushy eye lash or any other shape your prefer. For women in their 30s or younger the microstroking will likely not last for more than a year.

Eyebrow Microblading Origins

At first the only person who seemed to be doing eyebrow microblading was a permanent makeup artist out of Vancouver, but soon the technique spread like wildfire throughout salons all over Canada and the US. It’s not surprising, not only because of realistic results, but also because of the semi-permanence.

Eyebrow Microblading, from start to finish, takes about two hours, which includes the time it takes to design the eyebrow shape with a pencil, the time it takes to numb the skin, and the microstroking itself.

Things to Keep in Mind: The Pros of Microblading

If you are also interested in microblading, it’s important to be well informed! There are a lot of wonderful things about eyebrow embroidery. For example, short of eyebrow extensions (similar to lash extensions), eyebrow embroidery is the most natural-looking way of correcting sparse or uneven eyebrows, without the fear of losing hairs.

The semi-permanent makeup results last for up to 3 years, and very few touch-ups are needed. Because the results are not totally permanent, there is no need to worry about the changing eyebrow trends. One year you can have your brows microbladed to look fuller and thicker, and two years later you can have them microbladed to look thinner and sleeker.

Cons of Going for Eyebrow Microblading

However, there are also some risks associated with microblading. Eyebrow microblading is done with a blade that cuts into the skin, and one session can require over 100 tiny cuts. If the person doing the microblading is not properly trained they could cut too deep or skip important sterilization steps, potentially causing an infection. That is the worst-case scenario with microblading, of course.

Slightly less dangerous, but still scary, is the possibility of the eyebrow microblading technician just not doing a good job, and giving you a wonky eyebrow shape.

There is also some pain and discomfort involved in the process, although most microblading technicians will use a lidocaine-based numbing cream like Zensa before doing the procedure. However, the numbing cream may not be completely effective for everyone, and some discomfort may still be felt.

You Have Your Work Cut Out For You, Too

Semi-permanent makeup must be taken care of as much as one would take care of a regular tattoo. The aftercare of cosmetic tattooing is intensive; for the first few days the microblading recipient cannot wear any makeup near or above the eyebrows, lest makeup get in and infect the microblading cuts. They must keep the brow area clean, and well moisturized.

Some cosmetic tattoo artists swear by Vaseline, since it creates a total barrier and prevents bacteria from getting in the cuts. Other microblading technicians prefer natural oils like grape seed oil or coconut oil, since they still allow the skin to breathe and will not pull ink away from the microbladed eyebrow the way Vaseline might. Either way, you must remember to re-apply your chosen microblading moisturizer/protector multiple times a day.

For 7 days after the pigment embroidery it is important to avoid swimming or sweating heavily, since exposure to too much water can cause the microbladed eyebrows to scab over, which will cause the cuts to heal unevenly resulting in patchy eyebrows.

How to Choose Your Microblading Technician?

The key to having an amazing eyebrow http://blsmedspa.com/eyebrow-microblading-toronto/microblading experience is to do your research before choosing a technician, and making sure you are ready for the involved aftercare process. When you search for your permanent makeup technician, make sure to look at their Instagram or website gallery for microblading before and after pictures.

Make sure you like their personal style. Some cosmetic tattoo artists have a preference towards longer, bolder strokes, while another might prefer softer, shorter strokes. You might see one microblading gallery filled with precise, artificial looking eyebrows, while another will be filled with more natural looking eyebrows that will be a little messier. The beautiful thing about microblading is that there is no right or wrong style – it’s all up to personal preference.

However, if it seems like the microstroking was done very tightly that’s actually a concern. Some technicians know that very tight microblading strokes look better in the before & after pictures, and might attract more customers, but the truth is that they don’t heal well, and after 2-3 months the semi-permanent makeup will likely look blurry and muddy.

Important Questions to Ask Your Technician

Once you have selected your eyebrow embroidery technician, either give her a call first or do an in-person consultation. During an in-person consultation, or even right before the microblading session itself, the microblading technician should fill in your eye brow with pencil, giving an idea of the kind of shape you will end up with.

During the microblading consultation make sure to find out what kind of pigments she uses, and how often she replaces them. Some great permanent makeup pigment brands include the Nano, PCD, and Biotouch. These cosmetic tattoo pigments must be replaced on a yearly basis, lest they expire.

Next ask her how she sanitizes her blades and blade pens. The best answer would be that she doesn’t. A good microblading technician will use a brand new, disposable, sterile tool on every client.

The last question to ask is whether a touch-up is included, and after how long. While some cosmetic tattooing salons like to have their microblading clients come back after 3 weeks, waiting for 6 weeks is preferred.

Why is a Microblading Touch-up Necessary, Anyway?

After 6 weeks, the skin will have fully healed from the microblading. This means that a new layer of skin has grown over the eyebrow embroidery pigment, so it will become anywhere from 30% to 70% lighter.

Many people leave their first microblading appointment worried that their eyebrows are too dark, however by the time their skin has healed the color should be perfect, or maybe even too light.

In some cases the body totally absorbs the ink, and the semi-permanent tattoo totally disappears. In other cases, because of a variety of factors, including body chemistry, medication, or sun exposure, the pigment embroidery might even change color.

The touch-up is an opportunity for the microblading technician to fix any of the changes that may have occurred. And before you ask, yes, even changed ink color can be corrected! It’s also an opportunity for your permanent makeup artist to make any small corrections or changes to the shape.

A lot of the time, during the first appointment microblading clients will be nervous about their brows becoming too dark or heavy, only to completely change their mind 6 weeks later and request stronger looking-brows.

Pros and Cons of Cryolipolysis

There have been all types of ‘cures’ and treatments available for fat loss. Cryolipolysis is a revolutionary non-surgical contouring treatment that freezes stubborn fat. Like any other methods, Cryolipolysis has its pros and cons.

If you’ve been considering cosmetic surgery to get rid of unwanted body fat, you may be a good candidate for the Cryolipolysis procedure. Here’s a close look at the pros and cons of this innovative procedure.

The Pros:

It is a non-surgical procedure.

No downtime and you can return to normal right after treatment.

Little pain or discomfort.

No pain-killers needed afterwards.

Helps get rid of those areas of fat that didn’t go with dieting.

Can help tighten the skin

Precisely controlled cooling is applied to fat layer without harming the skin

The Cons:

There may be some redness, or bruising for a few days, but this will go and it is considered a safe treatment.

While it’s true that fat does not return to treated areas after the fat cells have been removed, this does not prevent subsequent weight gain. Your weight still needs to be maintained through diet and exercise.

Beware of scams, some people have been offering similar sounding treatment, or putting patients in a ‘cold chamber’ as a way of fat reduction.

Most people need to undergo several treatments in order to see significant results, and results are usually visible within two to four months, with continued improvements at the six-month mark.

During the treatment process, individuals are advised to follow a healthy diet and continue exercising, as these strategies will help the body release toxins and dead fat cells.

What is fat freezing sculpting ?

Do you have a bit of extra fat around your abdomen that you’d like to get rid of? Fat freezing treatment might be the option for you. Unlike other methods of fat removal, such as liposuction, which physically removes the fat from your body.

It’s a much less invasive option that other treatments, as it’s non-surgical and has little to no downtime. After your treatment, you can go back to your regular life right away. It usually takes several months for your results to appear, and you can double or triple your results by having the treatment two or more times.

Although This treatment destroys the treated fat, it’s not a magic bullet when it comes to weight loss. The treatment’s not recommended for people who are looking to lose a lot of weight. And, although the destroyed fat is gone for good, any remaining fat cells can get bigger if you end up gaining weight. Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to get the most from your Fat freezing treatment now and in the years to come.

Diet and Exercising

Sadly, a series of fat freezing treatments doesn’t give you a free pass to eat however and whatever you’d like and to take up permanent residence on your couch. You’ll still need to pay attention to what you eat and make sure you exercise regularly.  Although you don’t have to make major changes to your habits and lifestyle after the treatment, you might find that you place more importance on eating well than you did before.

One way to improve your diet and help keep your weight steady after treatment is to focus on eating whole foods when you get, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and protein. Skip the frozen dinners and processed foods, which usually contain more calories than you need and are likely to help you gain, not maintain, your weight.

Exercise can also help you maintain your weight and fat levels after treatment . If you aren’t used to exercising or are used to a sedentary lifestyle, it’s a good idea to speak with your doctor before you start any type of exercise program, to avoid any injury or other health issues.

Fat freezing treatment isn’t a way to lose massive amounts of weight. If you’re 20 pounds or more overweight, you’ll want to speak with your doctor about weight loss options before you consider Fat freezing treatment Remember, Fat freezing treatment only removes about 25 percent of fatty tissue from the treated area. It won’t help with all-over fat loss or with a significant reduction in fat.

But, if you’ve got a few extra pounds to lose, say less than 10, fat freezing treatment can be a good way to get your weight loss going. Watching the fat fade away over the course of a few months can be the encouragement you need to shed those last few pounds, by improving your diet and exercise

You might be wondering if weight gain is possible after Fat freezing treatment After all, the treated fat cells are destroyed and flushed out of your system for good. While it’s true that you won’t gain back the fat that was removed after Fat freezing treatment, weight gain is still a possibility.

That’s because the process of gaining or losing weight is different from the process of destroying fat. When you lose weight, your fat cells shrink, making you smaller. When you add more pounds, you don’t gain more fat cells. Instead, the cells you do have become larger, so that you also become larger.

Why do lash extensions fall out?

Many of you have probably, at some point, wondered why lash extensions fall out? Why can’t you keep your perfect lashes forever? Well, the truth is, lash extensions fall out with your natural lashes – yes, your natural are the culprits!

You might be wondering why you’ve never noticed your natural lashes falling out before having lash extensions. The answer is simple, when one of our natural lashes is about to fall out, new ones grow to replace them – almost the same size, so we difficult to spot the difference on the daily basis. When you have lash extensions – which are always darker and longer than your natural lashes, the gaps in your lashes are more obvious and you’re more likely to notice outgrown lashes on your pillow or floor – ahh the loss! So when you think your lashes are falling out because of the lash extensions, you need to understand that they don’t. So no need to worry, it’s not the lash extensions causing your lashes to fall out, it’s simply a natural process we all grow through – see what we did there 😉

The process is called a lash cycle. There are 3 stages phases of lash growth: Anagen Phase (lasts between 30-40 days until the lash reaches its full length), Catagen Phase (lash is pushed upwards, disconnecting from the blood supply – this might take up to 3 weeks) and Telogen Phase (final stage of the lash cycle finishing with lash falling out: it might take up to 14 weeks).

We all have different lash cycles and so it’s well worth to baring in mind that your own natural lash cycle, your lifestyle, and aftercare will affect how long your lash extensions last. We don’t apply lash extensions to baby lashes as they are too thin and weak to hold additional lash. It’s also not the weight of lash extensions, that makes your lashes fall our quicker! In general, the lash extensions will not pull out your natural lashes. However, if you pull on the extensions, your natural lash may come off with the extension. But do not worry; your natural lashes will grow back. Do not attempt to remove the extensions yourself; otherwise you will pull out your own natural lashes. Each human eye has about 200 lashes. The lashes usually grow in 3 rows and have a lifespan of 60 to 90 days.

Want to ensure that your lash extensions lasts longer? Try to avoid rubbing your eyes as this may cause them to fall out before your natural lash has grown out – especially in cases where the lash was too heavy for your natural lash. But we can assure you that if you take care of them as advised your lash extensions will not fall out before your natural lash.

As always, whether you decide to use an alternative lash salon service, we always stress the importance of researching for a qualified and skilled lash technician, one who uses good quality products, which will make the lashes stay longer and healthier.
